From Mountaineering to Green Army

Sang-at-Uli Mountaineering Society started as a collective of nature and outdoor oriented students of Philippine Normal University. A collective of students that came from different Department Based Organizations and ICUCOS like Biological Society, Social Science Club, English Club and Movement for the Advancement of Student Power.

In 1997 the collective tried to establish a mountaineering society but all of these efforts did not materialized because of some problems encountered by the members of the collective. During the first quarter of 1998 the Idea of establishing a mountaineering organization came, now with the help of a new batch of biology majors, debates within the collective occurred if the organization will be established as a pure mountaineering organization or as a progressive ecological mountaineering organization. After a long debate and exchange of ideas the collective came up with a decision stating that the organization will be a progressive ecological mountaineering organization that will cater the needs of the PNU students and will be a partner organization of MASP in raising the awareness of the PNU community. A new lane of struggle, a struggle for the protection of the environment, will be headed by the organization inside the campus.

During the first State of the Nation Address of the ex-president Joseph Ejercito Estrada, July 27, 1998, the first mountaineering and ecological mountaineering organization of Philippine Normal University was founded and been known as PNU-Sang-at-Uli Mountaineering Society or PNU-SUMSOC. Different environmental activities were organized with the help of different partner organizations such as the Biological Society, Social Science Club and Movement for the Advancement of Students Power. As time goes by SUMSOC became a member of Haribon Youth and been connected to other environmental groups and NGO's such as the Green Forum, Haribon Foundation, SEARICE, Philippine Greens, Green Peace Southeast Asia Campaign, Ecowaste Coalition, Akbayan and conducted different forum and symposium inside the campus. SUMSOC conducted different Campaigns such as the Anti-GMO, Clean Air act, Global Warming and Climate Change, Anti-Mining, NO to BNPP, Anti-VFA, No to JPEPA, Anti-Globalization/WTO, Food not Bombs/ Stop the war,  Anti-Toxic waste, Erap Resign Campaign,  Ecological Solid waste management, Clean-up campaigns and others.

Sang-at-Uli Mountaineering Society will always be a part of the mass active pressure groups and will always be a part of the Green Movement in the Philippines.

Long Live the Environmental Struggle!

Long Live The Green Movement!
